Homestay

Friendly, safe, comfortable and fun.  These are the words that best describe the GATE homestay experience.  Each homestay family is carefully chosen after 3 interviews, one of which is done by the local police.  GATE host families are chosen for the following reasons:

  • They are committed to the needs and interests of the student

  • They are genuinely interested in a cultural exchange, and in many cases have children of their own who are interested in learning about other cultures

  • They provide a home environment that is comfortable, safe and fun

  • They provide a private room for the student

  • They provide three meals every day plus snacks

  • They provide an English learning environment where students can practice what they learn at school

When students arrive in Canada, they are taken to their homestay families and  have an orientation to the house, the city, and to Canadian culture.  This includes understanding how to make local and long distance telephone calls, understanding public transportation, understanding Canadian currency, getting familiar with Canadian food and when meals are eaten etc.  They are welcomed and considered as one of the family.

Parents of GATE students also receive all the necessary homestay information two weeks before the student travels to Canada.  They are able to contact the Canadian family by phone, or email any time to speak with them or to get in touch with their child.

Our commitment is to the happiness and safety of the student, and we do all we can do make his or her stay in Canada as enjoyable as possible.
